Publisher requirements differ, but a single-column figure is often about 85 mm wide and a double-column figure about 170 mm wide. Confirm the actual instructions before submission.
At 300 DPI, the pixel width is approximately the width in millimetres divided by 25.4 and multiplied by 300. FigureCheck previews oversized output at a smaller screen scale while preserving the requested export dimensions.
Make every element survive reduction
- Inspect text, marker, line, error-bar, and legend size at the final physical width.
- Use direct labels or a compact legend with meaningful series names.
- Use colorblind-friendly distinctions and do not encode the result by color alone.
- Avoid JPEG when crisp text and lines matter; prefer PDF or SVG when accepted.
Final scientific checks
- Verify quantities, units, transformations, uncertainty definitions, and sample sizes.
- Check that axis ranges and omitted observations are defensible.
- Open the exported file independently and inspect it at 100%.
- Keep the generated Python code and statistical export with the analysis record.
